NYC Family Sessions in the Studio
As you might notice, most of my sessions take place outdoors at iconic city landmarks or within the intimate whereabouts of my client's homes. But every now and then, we opt for a studio setting in order to achieve an editorial/fashion-forward aesthetic.
For this Family Session, my client wanted elegant, chic, and modern portraits to use in their Holiday cards. We opted to hold the session in a daylight studio with a classic grey backdrop and a modern fabric backdrop. They dressed up elegantly for the occasion and together we achieved really stunning images that centered around their bond and emotions.
We didn't need props or an elaborate set for them to shine bright and be merry. It was one of my favorite studio sessions to date.
Personal note: recently, I was on a phone call with a prospective client who wanted a Holiday session in the studio. She was looking for a different aesthetic though, she wanted the fully decorated set with the trees and the lights and whatnot. Nothing wrong with that, if that's what you like go for it. But I would like for families to realize there are other options for their Holiday portraits. A more modern, editorial-inspired, and minimalistic approach that could render beautiful images you can enjoy all year round. These images will look amazing and feel just as festive with a beautiful card template.
My advice (and I'm totally biased) is, first of all, to go through a photographer's body of work so you can see if they shoot exactly what you are looking for. If you can't find it, the chances are they don't do that kind of photography. And second, if you find a photographer you like, go with them, allow them to surprise you, and create something you would not never imagined.
